Before sending a payslip, a medical report or a contract, add a password to the PDF. Without it, the file can't be opened. The encryption happens in your browser, so the document never leaves your device unprotected.

How to put a password on a PDF

  1. Open the PDF.

  2. Type the password and repeat it.

  3. Download the protected PDF and share the password through another channel.

When it helps

  • You are going to email a document with personal or financial data.

  • You share a file in a folder or a chat that other people can see.

  • You want to keep a copy of an important document safe.

Why use catScan

  • Private by design

This tool works inside your browser: the file is processed on your device and is never uploaded or stored.

  • Free to start

Sign in with Google and get 8 free uses per period, shared with the catScan app. 1 use = 1 downloaded file; if something fails, it doesn't count.

  • Nothing to install

It works in any modern browser on computer, tablet or phone. To scan paper with your camera, use the Android app.

Frequently asked questions

Will the person who receives it be able to open it?

Yes, with any PDF viewer (Adobe Reader, Chrome, Preview…), which will ask for the password. Send the password by another channel, not in the same email.

What makes a good password?

A long one: at least 12 characters, ideally a phrase that is easy for you to remember and hard for others to guess. The minimum here is 4 characters.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes. If you know it, use Remove password from PDF to save a copy that opens without asking for it.

Are my files stored?

No. This tool processes the file on your device, inside the browser: it is not uploaded to any server and nothing is stored.
